Origins of the Brilliant Cut

March 11th, 2010

The first person to design and master this admired cut was Marcel Tolkowsy in the early 1900’s. Tolkowsy came from a family of diamond cutters, but was also an engineer by trade. He is renowned the world over as the “father” of today’s round Brilliant Cut. In 1919 he also developed the “American Standard” which was the benchmark for North American diamond cutters. He developed the cut based on precise mathematical calculations that accounted both brilliance and “fire” (”fire” being the colours - often reds, yellows and oranges that reflect throughout the diamond).
